Renea McQuiggan
Renea McQuiggan’s path into the whiskey business began with corn, but not with a conventional distilling apprenticeship. She was born in June of 1956 in Kansas near agricultural land that had been held by her family for four generations. Corn and other grains continued to grow on that farm after McQuiggan built a successful career in corporate finance and made her home in Arizona. In 2016, McQuiggan proposed an idea to her husband, Mike McQuiggan, during a conversation over cocktails. Mike had retired, and Renea suggested that they take up small-batch distilling as a hobby, perhaps eventually even selling a few bottles. The proposal united two useful resources: grain from her family’s Kansas farm and Mike’s longstanding interest in Scotch and other whiskies. What began casually, soon became a serious investigation into the production of bourbon and vodka.
Renea and Mike traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, in 2017 to attend Moonshine University, where they studied the practical and commercial requirements of opening and operating a distillery. The program helped them develop contacts within the Kentucky distilling industry and better understand production, regulation, equipment, aging, blending, and brand development. They tested their early blends with friends in Carefree, Cave Creek, and Scottsdale, Arizona, and the favorable response encouraged them to proceed. In March 2017, they incorporated Elysian Desert Distilleries, with Renea serving as president.
The enterprise was woman-owned and family-operated from the beginning. Mike brought business experience and knowledge of whiskey to the operation, while Renea’s daughter, Abigail Merritt, served as vice president during the company’s formative period. Abigail’s husband, Stuart, learned the blending and bottling work and assisted with sales. Renea nevertheless remained the central executive figure, transforming the original hobby proposal into a spirits company built around Carefree Bourbon.
The flagship whiskey was a straight bourbon made from a mash bill of 75 percent corn, 21 percent rye, and 4 percent malted grain. Its bourbon was distilled outside Arizona, including production in Indiana, placed in new charred American oak barrels, and aged for more than two years. Mature barrels were then brought to Arizona, where the Carefree team handled blending, proofing, filtering, bottling, and labeling. This division of production is important: McQuiggan’s company developed the brand and its finished flavor profile and performed the Arizona production work, but it did not initially distill the whiskey at its Carefree premises. Carefree Bourbon was bottled at 90 proof and designed as an approachable, grain-led whiskey. Corn supplied its foundation, rye contributed spice, and malt helped complete the mash. Aging in new American oak produced caramel and vanilla characteristics, while the rye remained evident in the finish. McQuiggan emphasized consistency through repeated tasting and quality-control checks before bourbon was released for bottling. Before long, Carefree Bourbon began earning recognition outside Arizona. It received a silver medal from the American Distilling Institute in 2020, and the bourbon and vodka portfolio collected awards in international competitions during 2020 and 2021. In 2021 alone, the company received ten awards from the Bartender Spirits Awards. By 2022, Carefree’s spirits had accumulated more than 30 awards for taste and quality, while its Arizona distribution expanded through Crescent Crown and its online sales reached consumers in 41 states.
McQuiggan also announced plans for a large destination complex containing a distillery, bottling plant, tasting room, entertainment area, event space, and retail store, but construction at the old facility was found to be impractical. The company placed the property on the market and shifted its expansion plan toward an existing nearby building and a larger bottling operation. Carefree Spirits moved into the new facility on January 3, 2020. In 2021, McQuiggan renamed Elysian Desert Distilleries as Carefree Spirits Distillery, aligning the corporate identity with its best-known bourbon and the Arizona community where it had developed.
McQuiggan retired from corporate finance only to begin full-time work at Carefree Spirits the following day. As founder and president, she applied a disciplined standard to product development, requiring the team to reject any batch they would not personally drink. She also remained closely involved with visitors at the tasting room and placed particular value on consistently meeting high expectations. Under her direction, Carefree Spirits has developed from a family conversation in 2016 into an established Arizona blending, proofing, and bottling company with an award-winning straight bourbon at the center of its identity.
