Brian Prewitt, current master distiller at A. Smith Bowman distillery in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was born January 26, 1976 and raised in Colorado. As an adult, he earned a bachelor's degree in food science from Colorado State University, then got his start in the beverage industry at New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado, one of that state's pioneering craft breweries. The experience exposed him to large-scale fermentation, yeast management, quality control, and the precision required to produce consistent beverages. Like many future distillers, he discovered that brewing and distilling shared a common scientific foundation while differing dramatically in their final objectives. Brewing sought balance within a finished fermented product, while distilling offered the opportunity to reshape those flavors through careful control of distillation, maturation, and blending.

Prewitt then sought to deepen his technical knowledge by entering the Master Brewers Program at the University of California, Davis, long regarded as one of the premier educational institutions for brewing and fermentation sciences. The program expanded his understanding of raw materials, process engineering, microbiology, and quality assurance, subjects that would later prove invaluable in whiskey production. Following his studies at Davis, he joined Great Divide Brewing Company in Denver, eventually becoming a brewer responsible for producing consistent beer while refining his operational and technical skills. Those early years established a pattern that would continue throughout his career: combining scientific rigor with practical production experience.

But Prewitt's professional ambitions soon expanded beyond brewing. An opportunity at E. & J. Distillers in Modesto, California, allowed him to transition into distilled spirits, which introduced him to a much broader range of production techniques. Over the next several years he worked his way to the position of Senior Distiller while learning under two veteran master distillers whose combined experience exceeded seventy years. Under their guidance he gained firsthand knowledge of grain selection, fermentation management, distillation, barrel maturation, blending, and the numerous subtle decisions that determine the final character of mature whiskey.

By 2013, A. Smith Bowman Distillery in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was searching for a successor following the sudden and unexpected death of Master Distiller Truman Cox. Founded originally by Abram Smith Bowman during the 1930s, the distillery possessed the longest continuous whiskey traditions in Virginia. For decades it had produced Virginia Gentleman Bourbon before gradually repositioning itself toward premium bourbon expressions under the Bowman Brothers, John J. Bowman, Isaac Bowman, and Abraham Bowman labels after becoming part of the Sazerac Company.

So in September of 2013, Prewitt moved with his wife and three children to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take the job of Master Distiller at A. Smith Bowman. In hindsight, he has frequently described the position as his dream job, and his work quickly demonstrated why. Rather than merely preserving existing production methods, he embraced experimentation while maintaining consistency in the core bourbon lineup. At A. Smith Bowman, whiskey production involves careful attention to fermentation, triple distillation, barrel maturation, and selective finishing techniques that distinguish the distillery's bourbons from many competitors. Prewitt repeatedly emphasized that even small adjustments in fermentation, yeast performance, barrel selection, warehouse conditions, or finishing methods could significantly alter a bourbon's final profile. His philosophy blended analytical measurement with sensory evaluation, recognizing that successful whiskey requires both science and craftsmanship working together. The appointment of Brian Prewitt represented both continuity and renewal. He inherited a respected whiskey tradition while receiving considerable freedom to pursue innovation within the distillery's established bourbon program. The quality of those efforts soon attracted international recognition when John J. Bowman Single Barrel Bourbon earned the title of "World's Best Bourbon" at the World Whiskies Awards in consecutive years, an extraordinary accomplishment for a Virginia distillery competing against established Kentucky producers and leading international whiskey makers. Additional medals followed for Bowman Brothers Small Batch, and Isaac Bowman Port Barrel Finished Bourbon, reinforcing A. Smith Bowman's reputation as one of America's premier craft-focused bourbon distilleries. These awards reflected not simply isolated releases but the consistent quality emerging from the distillery's whiskey program.

Prewitt also became an active advocate for Virginia's growing distilled spirits industry through service in numerous industry organizations. In 2020, Governor Ralph Northam appointed him to the Virginia Spirits Board, an organization charged with encouraging research, education, agricultural development, and expansion of Virginia's distilled spirits industry. He also served in advisory roles with the Virginia Distillers Association, the Fredericksburg Regional Tourism Partnership, and as president of Fredericksburg's Grapes & Grains Trail. These appointments demonstrated that his expertise had become valuable not only within A. Smith Bowman Distillery but across Virginia's rapidly expanding whiskey community.

Throughout his career, Brian Prewitt has remained focused primarily on bourbon. Although his professional experience encompasses brewing, wine distillation, and other spirits, his most enduring contributions have come through advancing the quality and reputation of American whiskey produced in Virginia. By combining formal scientific training, decades of production experience, and a willingness to challenge conventional practices through careful experimentation, he helped elevate A. Smith Bowman Distillery from a respected regional producer into one recognized internationally for exceptional bourbon. Indeed, Prewitt’s professional record clearly establishes him among the leading contemporary American master distillers whose influence extends well beyond the walls of their own distilleries.
