Nathan Sumner, CFP® has earned multiple degrees through Whiskey University. He joined our organization in late 2020. In 2016 Whiskey University began offering Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees. Sumner earned his Bourbon Diploma on April 13th, 2021. In 2021, Nathan has designations that include “Master Bourbon Taster” (from Whiskey University) and “Certified Bourbon Steward” (from the Stave and Thief Society). Mr. Sumner also holds many additional credentials in the spirits industry.

Nathan grew up in Rural Eastern Oregon and has a Bachelor of Science in Education from Central Washington University and a Master of Science in Sports Business from New York University. He met his wife, Melissa, in New York and moved to Colorado in 2012 to start a family (3 boys). Upon relocating, Nathan continued his education in a new field with a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) certificate (Terry School of Business at the University of Georgia) and designation (CFP Board). He also has a Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) designation from the American Retirement Association and Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor (CPFA) designation from the National Association of Plan Advisors.

Sumner was in one of the first three nationwide semesters at Whiskey University and went to earn his Associate Degree after passing 15 classes on May 25th, 2021. Nathan teaches Bourbon 201, “The Bluegrass Region” and “The Big 3.” On July 20th, 2021 Sumner earned his Bachelors of Arts Degree with 24 classes, at Whiskey University and the title of "Adjunct Master Bourbon Taster" and the rank of First Lieutenant in the Bourbon Brigade. Nathan is an active member in many professional organizations and sits and has sat on various boards. Staying active is of great interest to Nathan. When he’s not chasing his kids to activities, he also teaches children to ski as a Certified Ski Instructor (Professional Ski Instructors of America) with Vail Resorts and volunteers as an active member in Rotary.

Although Nathan enjoys bourbon and whiskey, his passion began from sharing moments with friends, enjoying the flavors these spirits provide and stories shared. Upon further exploration, his appreciation grew to the point of intrigue and fascination the subtle tastes one can pull from this Usige or “water of life” (Gaelic translation).

Feel free to book a class with Nathan at nate@whiskeyuniv.com as he always enjoys sharing his knowledge, and learning from his students over a shared interest.
