Lewis Harsanyi

Los Angeles Distillery

Born May 29, 1947, Lewis Harsanyi began life far from the sun-soaked distilling region of Southern California. He was born in Soviet-controlled Hungary during the latter half of the 20th century, at a time when the country was governed under communist influence, with pervasive political tension and limited personal freedoms. Emigrating to the US as a toddler, young Harsanyi observed his family and absorbed the practical knowledge of the central European tradition of beer and spirits brewing, fermentation, and mechanical systems that would later define his career.

As an adult, Harsanyi did not simply join an existing company, he built one. He founded Bavarian Breweries and Distilleries (BBD), a firm specializing in the design, manufacturing, and installation of brewing and distilling equipment. The business became known for supplying Holstein stills and other precision systems to craft distilleries and breweries across North America. Under his leadership, BBD served as an important partner to numerous startups and established producers, shaping the technical foundations of many craft operations. This background in distillation engineering made Harsanyi a rare figure; someone who deeply understood both the hardware of production and the chemistry of fermentation and spirit aging. It also positioned him to test his own theories about what great whiskey could be.

In 2013, Harsanyi launched Los Angeles Distillery (LAD) in Culver City, California, as both a production facility and a living showcase for his craft philosophy. The distillery was not meant to be just an industrial warehouse; it was designed as a space where precision engineering and traditional craft could come together. From day one, Harsanyi drew on his decades of experience to build a distillery that integrated advanced control systems with copper pot stills calibrated for consistency. The facility produces a range of small-batch spirits, including rye whiskey, single malt, and bourbon whiskey, as well as clear spirits, but its whiskey program became a central expression of his craft.

Los Angeles Distillery’s bourbon and the broader whiskey portfolio reveals Harsanyi’s commitment to marrying old-world precision with new-world creativity. Unlike most American craft distillers, he chose to age whiskey in specially sourced Hungarian white oak barrels with thicker, denser staves, a decision rooted in his understanding of wood chemistry and spirit extraction. These barrels, from regions known for super-high-quality oak, foster intense wood-spirit interaction, leading to what many think to be richer flavor profiles and accelerated development compared to conventional American oak barrels. Reviewers and visitors highlight the dense mouthfeel, complex spice, and oak-driven character that distinguish LAD’s bourbons, traits tied directly to his barrel selection and still configuration.

One notable collaboration illustrating this approach was with Broken Barrel Whiskey Co., which used Los Angeles Distillery’s custom-aged bourbon, its including charred Hungarian oak barrels and a wheated mashbill, as part of a limited-edition single barrel release. The partnership underscores how Harsanyi’s choices and precision production

Lewis is married to Andrea Harsanyi, whom he credits with being his always-supportive and understanding partner in his many time-consuming entrepreneurial engagements over the years of their marriage.

Today, Los Angeles Distillery stands as a testament to Harsanyi’s commitment to craft whiskey and spirits. Its existence in Southern California, a market dominated by wine and cocktails, highlights how a technically rigorous, flavor-forward approach to bourbon and whiskey can thrive outside traditional American whiskey geographies. Harsanyi’s story is also emblematic of a broader shift in craft spirits: from the romantic image of the cowboy-distiller to the engineer-artist whose mastery of equipment, fermentation, and wood science elevates American whiskey in unexpected places.
