David was born in Middletown OH, a medium steel town just north of Cincinnati. I was a great place to grow up with lots of opportunities for work and fun. David was a from a Scouting family and very involved in my church. With a family tradition of fishing, hunting, camping, and a variety of other outdoor activities. I graduated High school in 1977, and was active in Art, Choir and sports, playing baseball, golf, and tennis. After high school I attended Anderson University earning a BA in Fine arts and crafts and k-12 education. I continued My studies at Ball State University earning a MA in Fine Arts painting and drawing, and an education component. David has been married to Brenda M Fischer-Arnold since 1993. A parent of three children, 2 from a previous marriage, and one with Brenda. With One son, 40 and two daughters 38, and 30. We had a busy life and currently 4 grandchildren. A grandson that is 15, and three girls, 6, 5, and 4.
David is a retired urban public school art teacher after 32 years, retiring in 2018. David currently Has a business teaching Limestone Carving, and a variety of other traditional hand crafts and the history of the crafts. The latest beginning venture into whiskey is a personal service business of Kilted spirits for private shopping assistance to set up tastings and educational groupings of whiskies for individuals wanting to learn more about whiskey varieties and introducing a broader experience for the curious, beginners, experienced, and discerning whiskey interested, under the Artisan Experience banner as it develops and grows.
David remains in Education teaching Art History as an adjunct professor since 2009 for Ivy Technical community college in Indianapolis IN and three semesters at the University of Indianapolis, during the search for a new full-time Art faculty. I have Been active, in my Church, as teachers union rep, the schools and communities I serviced, as well as Scouting, Bass club tournaments and coaching soccer at all levels from rec league kids to middle school coed soccer, developing programs for Indianapolis Public Schools programing, and coaching Men’s High School Varsity soccer, and with a peer started a women’s Varsity Soccer Teams in IPS as well. Growing up in a family of non-drinkers, I never had much experience with fermented beverages. My early experiences were as a young adult where I sampled several brands and styles of beer, wines and a few mixed drinks. I also had a bit of experience with Jim Beam, and Jack Daniels with coke, and then rum and coke. The micro-brewery boom began shortly after, and I found that not all beers tasted the same. I became a bit of an adventurer trying as many different beers as possible. Not long after that I visited the “Holladay distillery and had my first neat whiskies. I found an amazing variety of flavors in the free samples provided and proceeded to buy the samples of the others available. I had six tastes from the same distillery and everyone different. I bought my first Premium (or so I thought) that day and nursed it out for quite some time in neat pours. I reveled in the differences a variety that came from essentially the same recipe used in all whiskies. Ten years after that I started a journey into Scotches The varieties and complexities of an even simpler recipe had got to me. I moved to mainly Soley Scotch and Irish whiskies. I did settle for a long-standing appreciation of an established older brand for value and quality, Very Old Barton in two varieties red and green labels and made a point to visit my second major distillery Barton distillery in 2019. I had also visited a few small craft distilleries around Indiana including Starlight, Hotel Tango, Copper Run distillery, and Smith Creek in Branson, Ole Smokey and old forge distillery in Tennessee. I was so amazed at the flavors and varieties that I wanted to learn more. I looked online eventually for classes to learn more and that’s how I ran into whiskey University. One quick email for information and A gentleman called me, in a few short hours I was taking a class that night. That was the day my whiskey adventure started. I found bourbons as good and complex as scotch, and that was all she wrote. In the last couple of years have been an amazing journey into the amazing innovation of food processing by humankind over the centuries. I have learned the rich culture of American whiskey regions, and others all over the world. All about one simple idea and a complex Beveridge that has provided so much color for the culture of humankind. Some of the best times of my post kids’ adult life is the people I’ve met online, the relationships I made and fun we have had at the group conferences, and the historical people we have met. By the way, the whiskies are great, the people are real, the education is extensive. I have yet to find a whiskey I hate. I just like some better than others. As always each and every one is still different to this day.
